Anglicare Victoria welcomes new spending on child protection

Anglicare Victoria has welcomed reports the Victorian Government will invest $135 million over four years to improve child protection and child welfare services including the provision of 100 new one-on-one care placements for the State's most vulnerable children.

Anglicare Victoria CEO, Dr Ray Cleary, said the new places will offer an alternative to housing highly traumatised children in residential units with other young people who could be at risk from their behaviour.

"Some of these children have had shocking incidence of abuse carried out upon them and they need intensive care and support to address those issues, build trust and move forward in a positive way," Dr Cleary said.

"These new one-on-one placements will give specialist carers a chance to work intensively with the children and will ensure they cannot harm or negatively influence other children who are in a vulnerable position."

Other initiatives in the $135 million package include early intervention for children at risk and training and support for relatives called on to care for their grandchild, niece or nephew.

"The Government is relying more than ever on family members such as grandparents to take up caring responsibilities for children removed from their parents and we are therefore happy to see resources made available for the training and support of those carers."

Dr Cleary said that together, these measure will go some way towards addressing the current crisis in child welfare services.

"The Minister and government is to be commended for this initiative. We have campaigned for some time to see measures such as these introduced and are happy to see the Government has been listening to us and other family welfare providers."

Anglicare Victoria is the State's largest provider of foster care services.
