New program to help adolescents thrive in care
When young people arrive in foster care often the first priority is for them to be in a safe place.
Now, with the launch of a new therapeutic foster care program for adolescents in Melbourne's Eastern Region, young people at risk in will have the opportunity to heal from trauma while living with foster carers.
Program Manager Andrea Dwyer says the new program will work closely with the Australian Childhood Foundation and focuses on providing a supportive environment to help young people heal from trauma, develop resiliance and thrive as they become young adults.
"We know that some young people need more than a safe environment when they come into care. Many need access to counsellors, specialist case-workers and, importantly, foster carers who help them understand their past experiences," says Andrea.
Andrea says the recent increases in young people over the age of 10 needing foster care has prompted Anglicare Victoria Eastern Region to think about the best ways to meet the needs of young people.
"For the past few years we've provided a similar program for children under 12 so we know it works. Now it's time to roll it out across all ages."
Anglicare Victoria is calling all community members who are interested in finding out more about this program to call 1300 889 335.
