15 Year Old Needs a Foster Carer

Last week we announced a new program which will enable young people to thrive and heal from trauma while they are in foster care (read last week's announcement).

Now Anglicare Victoria hopes to kick start the program by supporting fifteen year old Jarrod*. All that is standing in the way is finding him the right foster carer.

Jarrod is currently living in a children's residential care unit being looked after by staff. But, due to his mild intellectual disability, Program Manager Andrea Dwyer says moving into the adolescent residential unit wouldn't best for him.

"Jarrod is a perfect example of a young man who we think would do really well in a therapeutic based foster care placement," says Andrea.

"If Jarrod had a positive male role model in his life who could offer stability and care, as well as helping him to process his experiences we see a really bright future ahead for him."

"He loves trains and cars and finding out how things work, as well as animals and pets."

"Jarrod would probably best suit a male carer or a family with a male present and most likely a family who doesn't have other children living at home."

But she says with the new therapeutic program for adolescents set to begin soon there will be a need for new foster carers from all family types and walks of life.

"Whether you're able to support through respite care one weekend a month or support other children and young people for short-term or long-term placements there is a way that everyone can get involved and make a difference."

Find out more about Jarrod on our dedicated webpage where you can see the world through Jarrod's eyes through a series of photographs and stories he created last year.
