Local Health Professionals Rally Together
A local orthodontist and private hospital recently gave generously of time and resources to provide life changing dental care for a boy in foster care in with Anglicare Victoria Eastern Region.
At 10 years old the boy, who has multiple disabilities, was unable to eat hard food and his behaviours were becoming increasingly challenging for his foster carers to manage.
On advice from doctors, his foster carers took him to see an orthodontist who moved immediately to remove 10 baby teeth- free of charge. Seeing the generosity of the orthodontist, the private hospital also halved their fee, charging only cost price for the care.
The orthodontic treatment will be ongoing but the Orthodontist has offered to also provide the future dental work for free.
Liz Zinn, a caseworker with Anglicare Victoria says the experience was really touching, "It's great to see everyone pulling together. Had they not offered the private dental care at cost price as they did- or in the orthodontist's case, for free- we could have been on a waiting list for a very long time".
In a remarkable addition to this story, the boy's behaviours have already begun to improve.
"I've never seen him in such a good mood" says Liz, "It is possible that his behaviours were connected to the pain he was in before the baby teeth were removed and if that is the case this is really a life changing gift".
