Disability support

Helping families with disabled children

Anglicare supports families caring for a child with an intellectual or physical disability.

Programs recruit, train, assess and match children with a care-giver for anywhere between one week and two years.

Families are also provided with assistance in co-ordinating appropriate support services to meet their specific needs such as respite care, counselling, holiday opportunities and sibling support groups.

Managing learning difficulties

Undetected or unaddressed specific learning difficulties and dyslexia (SLD) can turn education into a tortuous experience for children and potentially result in poor school results, low self-esteem, social exclusion and depression.

Anglicare Victoria works collaboratively with children, their parents and school staff to manage learning difficulties and develop a plan to make the most of each child’s education.

The program works towards the following outcomes:

  • empower families
  • improve/maximise the academic potential of children impacted by SLD
  • improve/maximise the social connections and self-esteem of children impacted by SLD
  • improve family/school connections and relationships
  • enhance teachers’ knowledge of SLD and its impacts
  • empower teachers by providing them with skills and strategies to address the impact of SLD among their students, both now and in the future.
