Local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people will be showcasing their art work in Gippsland as part of the Reconciliation Week Children’s Art Competition.
The competition, held by Anglicare Victoria and Latrobe City Library is a way for the community to become involved in acknowledging National Reconciliation Week, with the theme being ‘Don’t Keep History a Mystery.”
Community Development Officer Cathrine Munston says creating artwork is an important creative outlet for children and meaningful for children to build on their overall cultural understanding.
“Reconciliation Week is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the relationship we share with our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. It also enables us to encourage our children to reflect on what reconciliation might mean for them and to provide an audience for their artwork. Often our young people can lead us in reconciliation because it is their future that we are creating.
“We are particularly grateful to the partnership of Latrobe City Libraries in assisting with after school Art workshops and providing a space for the display of the art.”
The art launch will be held on Wednesday May 30 in Moe.
