The Position
As a Live-In Youth Mentor your role is to live at the property provided by Anglicare Victoria, together with another Live-In Youth Mentor and two young people aged 16-19 (who are transitioning out of care). You are expected to provide direction, encouragement and support within the household, act as a positive role model and assist the young people in the house to develop their independent living skills (cooking, budgeting, cleaning etc.).
You are expected to demonstrate a positive and balanced lifestyle and be engaged in some form of employment, study or training. You will be required to participate equally in domestic chores and duties and to ensure that any conflicts arising within the household are dealt with, in a positive and productive manner. The young people at times present with complex needs and may occasionally display challenging behaviours. Successful applicants will receive comprehensive initial training, as well as the opportunity to participate in ongoing training opportunities through Anglicare Victoria and access specialised support services when needed.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
- This is a volunteer position, and no wage or salary is payable. Whilst living in the share house property, Live-In Youth Mentors are not required to pay rent or utilities, and some groceries are provided.
- The occupant of this position recognises the importance of working within a team, and to coordinate proposed absences etc with the relevant people and with ample notice where possible. At all times there must be at least one Live-In Youth Mentor (Lead Tenant) residing at the property overnight.
- All volunteers are to participate in training and supervision.
- This position is subject to an initial one-month trial followed by a three-month probationary period, which may be extended to six months.
- Occupants of this position are subject to a satisfactory Criminal History Check prior to commencement and will be required to hold a current Working with Children card.
- Partners are not permitted to stay overnight at the property; however, staying overnight away from the property can be coordinated, ensuring at least one mentor is always available.
- This role is not suitable for people who care for their own children. Pets are negotiable.
- There is no particular experience required, nor specific demographics, if you’re a good human who connects well with young people, then you might just be a great fit!

To Be Successful in this Position You Will Need
Essential
- Ensure a safe, supportive and positive environment that is free from abuse
- Demonstrate a personal readiness and capacity to become an effective Live-In Mentor
- Good understanding or willingness to learn about adolescent development and trauma
- Promote the positive development and independent living skills of young people
- Ability to work as part of a team (with the other Live-In Mentor, the young people and the Anglicare Victoria care team)
Desirable skills, knowledge, and experience
- Voluntary and/or mentoring experience with young people
- Positive interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence
- A genuine passion for supporting young people in the community
- A background in community services, mentoring, social work, youth work, education, health or emergency services will be highly regarded
