Foster care offers children a safe place to stay while their family is unable to take care of them. Foster carers can choose from different types of care placements, ranging from emergency, short term, long term or respite care.
Foster carers come from all walks of life, so it doesn’t matter your situation, relationship status or whether or not you have children. AV offers training and ongoing support to ensure you can provide suitable care for children.
Why become a foster carer?
Foster caring is a very rewarding experience for individuals who want to play their part in the community. If you love children and young people, it can make a huge difference to the life of these families in need of support. Foster caring helps further develop your empathy, patience and compassion, and you can offer support in a way that suits your lifestyle, availability and work commitments.
Becoming a foster carer
Anyone over the age of 21 is eligible to become a foster carer, and we provide training and support to ensure you and your household is set up to care for young people in need of support. You are still able to maintain any work or personal commitments and we can help you select the type of foster care placement that will suit your situation.
Understand the time commitment
If you are considering foster caring, it’s important that you do understand the commitment you are involving yourself in. While we encourage people from all backgrounds and situations to offer their support, caring for children and young people takes time, patience and empathy.
The Foster Care training program, ‘Shared Lives’, is a broad and informative program which equips carers with the tools and skills needed to manage a variety of issues that children and young people may experience in care. The information helps carers understand how to support children with traumatic backgrounds and implement strategies for challenging behaviours.
The training addresses factors like some of the myths around fostering, about helping children feel safe while also promoting positive behaviour and looking closely at identity and culture. A good deal of the training highlights how carers are supported during their role as foster carers.
Steps of becoming a foster carer
First contact with your agency: After you have submitted your enquiry you will be contacted by your local agency to discuss suitability.
Information session: We will invite you to attend a session to discuss everything you need to know about foster care.
Paperwork and checks: You and everyone in your household will then be required to complete a Police Check, Working with Children Check and a health check. This is also where you will be asked to write a life story.
Training: You will undertake 24 hours of compulsory training to help you start your journey, and understand all the expectations of being a foster carer.
Home visits and assessments: We want to make sure your household and living situation are suitable for children and young people, we will visit your home to confirm this.
Accreditation panel: The accreditation will review your application and training. This panel is made up of representatives of our foster care agency including at least one representative from The Department of Health and Human Services.
Accreditation and review: Your accreditation lasts 12 months and will be reviewed annually. From this point you sign a code of conduct.
Placement: Once you have been approved, you’re all set! We will find a suitable placement for your situation.
