Lead Tenant Housemate / Youth Volunteer

Anglicare Victoria is looking for a compassionate person interested in becoming a Lead Tenant Housemate / Youth Volunteer. Your main role is to live and sleep overnight at the selected house in Surrey Hills with another Lead Tenant and be a positive role model to three young people (aged 16-18) living in the home.

OVERVIEW OF PROGRAM

Lead Tenant houses are an important model of service for young people aged 16-18 years who have the ability to adapt to more independent living arrangements, but who require support and encouragement to develop the necessary skills to share accommodation and live successfully in community settings.

POSITION OBJECTIVES

The ‘live in’ Lead Tenant Housemate / Youth Volunteer lives at the Surrey Hill house rent and utility free. This is not a paid position. However, you will be entitled to a $75 per week honorarium payment.

As a Lead Tenant Housemate you are expected to demonstrate a positive and balanced lifestyle, to participate equally in domestic chores and duties and to ensure that any conflicts arising within the household are dealt with in a positive and productive manner. You are expected to establish positive and meaningful relationships with young people, act as positive role models and coordinate household routines in a shared housing arrangement.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. To act as a positive, mature and responsible role model to young people, demonstrating appropriate independent living skills, engagement in education/training/employment, recreation, self-care, communication and behaviour.

2. To provide general direction, encouragement and informal support to the young people within the household

3. Establish and maintain appropriate boundaries and rapport with young people who have experienced trauma

4. To be available for and participate in house meetings

5. Regularly liaise with the Lead Tenant Care Coordinator about issues affecting the residents or household

6. Participate in regular supervision and maintain open and honest communication with program staff

7. Access the program’s OnCall system for emergencies or support

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Currently undertaking some form of employment or study
  • Ability to promote the positive development and independent living skills of young people in Lead Tenant accommodation
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Previous voluntary and/or mentoring experience with young people is highly desirable
  • Positive interpersonal skills
  • A genuine passion for supporting young people in the community.
  • A background in Social/Youth Work, Education, Health is advantageous but not essential
