Brave Ben-A Carer’s Story, Part Four

Over the next few weeks Ben becomes accustomed to a more normalised routine, attends school every day and is displaying more confidence in class.

He continues to attend weekly sessions of Move Groove and Grow and loves taking part in weekend games of football.

Nadine is enjoying spending time with him and is glad that she is able to balance her full time job in nursing with her temporary responsibilities to Ben. She is thankful for the strength and support shown by her case worker Sonya, who has been a great guidance through this experience. Their weekly appointments to discuss Ben’s development and his ongoing care are a regular opportunity to learn and discuss strategies to assist him during this difficult period of transition.

Sonya mentions that Ben is unable to reunited with his birth mother in the medium term and asks Nadine how she would feel about Ben staying with her for the next six months. Nadine is more than happy to continue caring for him, however she is most concerned with the impact that this news will have upon his mental and emotional wellbeing. She is unsure if his behaviour will deteriorate again and how he will cope in being away from his mother for so long.

Only time will tell but Nadine is up for the challenge. She will do whatever it takes to keep Ben safe and give him an opportunity for a better future.
