Brave Ben-A Carer’s Story, Part Two

Nadine is Ben’s temporary carer. She has prepared pancakes to welcome Ben.

Pancakes are another childhood favourite of hers. He has still not responded to any of her questions since his arrival last night and she is hoping that pancakes may help break the ice.

Sonya, the case worker phones Nadine and asks how everything is going. She mentions that Ben needs to attend a health assessment this morning. Until Ben goes home or moves on, he can continue to attend his regular school, as he likes it there and is part of the under 11’s football team. Nadine is advised that she will need to gently mention to Ben that it will be a long time before he can see Mum again.

Ben

Nadine again asks him if he would like a hot chocolate and to her surprise, he responds. Apparently, hot chocolate is his favourite drink. This is a minor breakthrough, however she realises that there will be many challenges in the days and perhaps, weeks ahead.

Later that day, Ben completes all of his medical checks and is very underweight for his age. Nadine speaks to the doctor about a nutritional plan for him. She knows there is a long way to go until this little boy will feel like himself again, but she is determined that he will have a better future.
