STATEMENT ON THE HOMELESSNESS SUMMIT

FROM PAUL MCDONALD, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OF ANGLICARE VICTORIA

11 July 2019

Anglicare Victoria welcomes today’s announcement by the Lord Mayors that they will hold a homelessness summit. This will be a very important event for the nation to bring all tiers of government and community around homelessness.

This summit is overdue and it is a fantastic opportunity for all tiers of government to unite to address this national crisis in homelessness.

Every day, Lord Mayors see the consequences of no affordable housing, crowded waiting rooms awaiting emergency accommodation and poor prospects for sustainable shelter. We know we have over 100,000 homeless people in this country, but a further 300,000 people that are on the brink of homelessness – all in precarious housing circumstances.

This is an opportunity to develop the necessary sense of urgency in what is Australia’s most critical social problem, and address a strategy based on scale and innovation. Anglicare Victoria urges all governments to join with the Lord Mayors and ensure this summit into a historic turning point for the 100,000 Australians who sleep rough every night.
