Victorian Government’s jobs guarantee to turbo-charge social services sector

A new jobs initiative announced by the Andrews Government today will help to turbo-charge new recruits to the social services sector, according to the head of Anglicare Victoria.

Helping the government to launch the initiative at Anglicare Victoria’s office in Collingwood this morning, CEO Paul McDonald said the new initiatives would provide a welcome influx of new people to a very rewarding sector.

“Many sectors are finding it difficult to attract staff and the social services area is no exception. I’m hopeful that the new Jobs that Matter and Jobs Guarantee campaigns will make this essential service area more attractive to people who may not have previously considered working with some of the state’s most vulnerable,” Mr McDonald said.

“Combining a free TAFE course with a job guarantee is about as good as it gets – it’s a great opportunity for people to train up and have a go in an exciting new job. During the pandemic, many people have recognised the need to do something meaningful, and this could be just the ticket.

“Community services is very rewarding, offering both direct client-facing roles and back-of-house support positions,” he said.

Today the Andrews Government announced a $39 million jobs commitment that will guarantee a free place in a Diploma of Community Services, and match them with an appropriate job when they graduate.

Mr McDonald said social services offered a very diverse range of roles and areas, which helped people to retain their passion and skills development over a long career.

“This is very meaningful, hands-on work. Whether it’s going into family homes and helping people with their parenting skills, working with survivors of family violence and their children, or on the frontlines giving people essential food relief, you can see the impact almost immediately.”

“There is a vast range of ways to help others in need in this sector. That’s why so many people turn up every day and some stay for their whole career.
