Free internet for one year
The Australian Government has launched the School Student Broadband Initiative to provide free home internet for one year for up to 30,000 unconnected Australian families with school-aged students.
How can the School Student Broadband Initiative help your child?
Children who can access online learning at home as part of their education are more likely to engage in classroom activities.
Access to fast internet at home can also support children to build their digital skills, learn how to safely use the internet and participate in a world that is more dependent on digital technology.
Is my family eligible for the School Student Broadband Initiative?
To be eligible, families must:
✓ Have a child living at home that is enrolled in an Australian school in 2023.
✓ Not have an active National Broadband Network (nbn®) Internet service at home. Having a mobile internet service does not affect eligibility.
✓ Live in a premises that can access the National Broadband Network via a standard connection – this will be checked for you.
Call 1800 954 610 (between 8am and 7pm) and our team will check your eligibility.
How does the School Student Broadband Initiative work?
Community organisations, including Anglicare Victoria, have been nominated to help families participate in the initiative.
If you are eligible, the home internet service will be provided at no cost for one year through a participating internet provider over the National Broadband Network. These internet providers will have their own step-by-step process to get you connected, which may involve identification.
Once you sign up, the internet provider will help you set up your connection. The initiative does not include devices such as a computer or tablet. Other household members can use the internet service provided through this initiative.
The one-year period will start from the day your service is activated with your chosen participating internet provider. At the end of the one-year period, you should not be placed on a paid service by your internet provider without your consent. The Australian Government is considering options beyond the one-year free period.
Eligible families have until February 2024 to use their free internet voucher.
Call 1800 954 610 (between 8 am and 7 pm) to check eligibility and apply.

The high-level process for a family getting a School Student Broadband Initiative (SSBI) service is outlined below:
- Step 1: Nominating Organisation identifies a family with school aged students who they believe would likely benefit from having access to home internet.
- Step 2: Nominating Organisation provides information about the program to family and secures consent to check their primary residential address via nbn for eligibility.
- Step 3: Nominating Organisation provides address information to nbn to check that the premises is not currently connected to a service over the nbn network and is serviceable by the nbn network.
- Step 4: nbn confirms the premises is eligible and provides the Nominating Organisation with a numerical voucher code to share with the family. nbn will also share with the Nominating Organisation information about available participating internet providers for the family to review and contact. Nominating Organisation sends eligible family an eligibility letter containing the voucher code and internet provider information.
- Step 5: Eligible family selects and contacts preferred participating internet provider and uses their voucher code to redeem a free 12-month service.
