“Everyone has the right to a safe and secure home” – The Orange Door opens in Central Victoria

Thursday 29 October

Individuals, children and young people affected by domestic violence across Central Victoria will now have greater access to help and support, following the launch of The Orange Door in Bendigo.

Run by local partner agencies, The Orange Door is a free service for those experiencing family violence or families who need some extra support.

Local parents and carers will also be able to access services offered by the Orange Door if they need extra support looking after the children in their care, or they are concerned with their behaviour or wellbeing.

Francis Lynch, Regional Director of Anglicare Victoria in Central Victoria, said he is pleased that the region will now be better resourced to improve the situation for the victims of family violence and provide them with the support they deserve.

“This year has been tough on all of us. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced us to spend more time at home, but for some people home isn’t a place where they feel safe. More and more people are needing support and accessing our services,” Mr Lynch said.

“For the best part of 2020 we’ve been faced with social isolation, increased unemployment, a closure of schools and services, as well as an increase in the cost of housing and utilities. An unprecedented amount of pressure has been put on families, but it’s the vulnerable in our community who are feeling it most.

“The arrival of The Orange Door in our region is very welcome. As one of the leading partners involved in its operation, Anglicare Victoria will have more than 20 staff members dedicated to the facility.

“The services available at The Orange Door will complement existing family services available in Central Victoria and reach more families who need some extra support. Everyone has the right to a safe and secure home.”

The Orange Door welcomes people of all ages and backgrounds, in person or over the phone. The hub will provide family violence support, services for families, specialised Aboriginal services and men’s services across the region.

Support services will be accessible in Bendigo, Echuca, Maryborough, the Macedon Ranges and Mount Alexander.
