Making a Difference: How to Support Foster Care Without Being a Foster Parent

The foster care system in Australia is designed to provide safe, loving homes to vulnerable kids. It’s not just foster parents who make the big difference; foster care relies on a whole network of selfless, passionate individuals who help make foster care happen.

Even if you’re not able to become a foster parent, there are still so many ways in which you can help organisations like Anglicare Victoria to provide safe, nurturing homes for Australia’s most vulnerable children.

Let’s discuss with the team at Anglicare Victoria and explain how to support foster care without being a foster parent.

Not everybody can be a foster parent

Even though you’re passionate about caring for disadvantaged kids, you may not have the time, resources or facilities to become a full-time foster parent. Anglicare Victoria acknowledges this, and understands the fact that it’s OK to look after yourself before looking after others.

How to support foster care with foster parenting

Thankfully, there are a whole bunch of ways to support foster care without being a foster parent. From volunteering, to admin, to mentoring, foster care relies on a range of different roles in order to provide high quality care to foster children.

  • Donations
Donations are always welcomed and incredibly appreciated. You can make a donation here.
  • Volunteering
Anglicare Victoria is blessed to have over 1800 volunteers who generously donate their time in order to give back to the community. There are myriad opportunities for volunteering at Anglicare Victoria, which you can read more about here.
  • Friends Volunteer Program
Highly flexible, the Friends Volunteer Program provides practical assistance to children and their carers across a number of Home Based Care programs in Melbourne’s Eastern metropolitan suburbs. Roles include child minding, helping with transport to various school or extracurricular activities, tutoring, mentoring, or acting as a role model to young people. The program is ideal for those who are time-poor but want flexibility and variety.
  • Homework Clubs
Want to make homework fun and less stressful for vulnerable students? Helping out at one of our Homework Clubs is an awesome way to do this. Volunteers help vulnerable children complete their homework in a safe, fun environment.
  • Emergency Relief
Emergency relief centres at Anglicare Victoria provide an array of immediate assistance to struggling families, such as groceries, clothing, medication, financial assistance and counselling. You can help provide these facilities to families who need it the most.
