School Re-Engagement Programs

Education plays a key role in setting up children for success. Whether they’re interested in an academic or an applied skills pathway, their education is absolutely vital to giving them the tools they need to succeed.

If your child has stopped engaging with education and has been experiencing school refusal, we understand that it’s a stressful period for all parties involved – parents and caregivers, teachers and, of course, your child.

But thankfully, a school re-engagement program can assist your child with addressing issues that are making them reluctant to attend school.

In this post, Anglicare Victoria explains school re-engagement programs, and their Navigator program which is dedicated to getting students back into schooling.

Victorian Government’s re-engagement programs

The Victorian Government has established re-engagement programs which are designed to support Victorian government school children from years 7-10, who are disengaging or at risk of disengaging from their education. These programs are delivered by third-party Registered Training Organisations (RTOs).

Anglicare Victoria’s Navigator program

Anglicare Victoria is delighted to offer the Navigator program, a school re-engagement program for students between the ages of 12 and 17. In our re-engagement program, we offer tailored support for your child at a time when they need it the most. Whether your child is dealing with issues in the schoolyard such as bullying, lacking confidence in the classroom, falling out with friends, or experiencing depression and anxiety, our case managers are expertly trained and qualified to give top-quality support.

How it works:

The Navigator program is simple, yet it can yield life-changing results and encourage students to re-engage in their schooling. Here’s how the Navigator program works:

  • The young person is assigned a case manager and they work together in a place that suits the young person – at home, at school or at a café.
  • Case managers help to identify and utilise the young person’s strengths and skills to make school a more positive experience.
  • They provide coaching and mentoring to enhance the young person’s wellbeing and develop resilience, self-efficacy and social skills.
  • Case managers work with the young person, their family, carers and school to reduce or remove the barriers that prohibit school attendance.
  • Once the young person is back attending school they are monitored to ensure sustained engagement.

Is my child eligible for the Navigator program?

Your child is eligible for the Navigator re-engagement program if they:

  • Are aged between 12 and 17 years of age
  • Have attended less than 30% of the previous school term or equivalent time period (if enrolled in a school)
  • Either live in or have most recently been enrolled in an education setting in a current Navigator Areas.

The team at Anglicare Victoria is here to help your young person overcome their reluctance towards attending school, offering therapeutic services to get your child back into the classroom. Every young person deserves an education, but they also deserve to feel confident and safe when going to school. Contact Anglicare Victoria if you’d like to know more about how we can help you.
