Care-system Impacts on Academic Outcomes
The CIAO study collected information from multiple sources on almost 200 children and young people receiving placement and support services from Anglicare Victoria and Wesley Mission Victoria.
The study identified three discernable groups of children in the sample; a ‘damaged’ younger group of children who had high rates of cognitive, emotional and physical disorders and extremely poor school achievement, a ‘disengaging’ group that was less compromised but older and showing very poor engagement and attachment to school and another group of children, labelled ‘doing well’, who appeared to be functioning on par with children and young people in the community generally.
