Buldau Yioohgen, meaning “Big Dreams” in Woiwurrung language, is AV’s Indigenous Youth Leadership Academy. The program provides a welcoming, culturally safe and supportive environment, and encourages our Indigenous youth to think big beyond their current life circumstances.

Led by Anglicare Victoria’s Aboriginal Cultural Elders Auntie Kellie and Uncle Ian, Buldau Yioohgen provides vulnerable young Indigenous people located in rural, regional and metropolitan Victoria with opportunities to strengthen their connection to culture. With community by their side, it then offers exposure to professional work environments that might otherwise be difficult to access.

Developed by The Long Walk and Anglicare Victoria, the program brings together community, cultural and sporting groups to support young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as they strive towards their educational, employment and leadership goals. It links young people with community Elders, industry and cultural experiences with partner organisations including Tennis AustraliaOpera AustraliaAustralian National Academy of MusicMelbourne Victory FCDarley International Stud and Federation University.

Why was Buldau Yioohgen developed?

Adolescence marks a vital juncture in a young person’s life – it’s a time of decision making about relationships, education and career paths, work and finances. Young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people face additional challenges in transitioning into adulthood. Inter-generational trauma, racism and prejudice, and socioeconomic disadvantage widen the gap in social and economic standing for these young people in comparison with their non-Aboriginal peers.  Anglicare Victoria’s Buldau Yioohgen Big Dreams Academy seeks to bridge this divide.

Inspired, connected to culture, and supported by their community, program participants are more likely to re-engage with school and healthy living. As they establish their place within contemporary Australian culture, we see them walk two worlds with greater belonging and confidence.
