Anglicare Victoria acknowledges the lifelong legacy of pain and suffering experienced by people affected by past historical adoption practices. We recognise the emotional, social, and legal impacts that adoption can have across their lifetime.

We’ve formally recognised these experiences through our own apology, which reflects our commitment to listening, learning and supporting those affected. You can read the full apology.

Our Adoption Information Service (AIS) provides confidential, compassionate support to individuals and families affected by adoption. We understand this is a complex and sensitive topic, and we’re here to help with care and respect whether you’re seeking answers, connection or support.

Support is available for:

  • People who were adopted
  • Adoptive parents
  • Birth parents who placed a child for adoption
  • Other family members affected by past adoption

Understanding the impact of past adoption practices

AIS operates with deep knowledge of the lasting effects of historical adoption practices. We also recognise that not everyone wishes to access their records. Our service is designed to support people wherever they are in their journey, whether they’re ready to explore their history or simply need someone to talk to.

What we offer

We offer a range of services to support people who have been affected by adoption, including:

  • Adoption records and information – We help you access documents and records related to past adoptions, in accordance with the Adoption Act 1984.
  • Counselling and emotional support – Our qualified staff provide counselling to help you explore your experience, process emotions, and find clarity.
  • Support without accessing records – If you choose not to view your records, we can still offer support and guidance tailored to your situation.
  • Support for reconnection – We assist with reconnecting families through respectful and trauma-informed outreach and mediation services.
  • Search assistance – If you’re looking to locate or contact birth relatives, we can guide you through the search process and provide practical support.
  • Referrals to other services – If you need additional help, we can connect you with other trusted services and professionals.
